"DFC" Program Celebrates 3 Years!
Dec 3, 2021
Belleville, ON – The Alzheimer Society of Hastings-Prince Edward (ASHPE) is celebrating three years of successful community training and outreach made possible from support from the Ontario Trillium Foundation for the Societies local Dementia Friendly Communities program. Dementia Friendly Communities training helps organizations, businesses and the public better understand the everyday experiences of people living with dementia and equips them with the skills and confidence to better serve persons living with dementia and their care partners.
The worldwide Dementia Friendly Communities movement began in Japan to accommodate an aging population. From there, this initiative spread to the UK, Europe, Australia and North America, and is becoming a global effort to create communities that acknowledge the human dignity of people living with dementia. Alzheimer Societies across Canada including ASHPE have begun offering programming to their communities to help support this vision. Locally, any business or organization who has 75% of their staff trained through the program receive a recognition decal for their door or window, to show their support and participation.
Since the local Dementia Friendly Communities program launch in 2018, ASHPE has trained hundreds of local businesses and organizations on how best to serve those living with memory loss and demonstrated how to help keep those living with dementia active and engaged in our community. These include local libraries, municipalities, banks, grocery stores and more.
This program could not be possible without the support and input from our connected, lived experience volunteers who helped shape the program and its content - allowing ASHPE to continue this important and expanding education for years to come. To register for a training or education for your organization, please contact Public Education Coordinator Jennifer Loner at Jennifer.loner@alzheimerhpe.ca or call 613-962-0892.
