Planning for the Journey ahead! - Change
Sarnia-Lambton
“The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.” –Socrates
Change is an inevitable part of life, but knowing that doesn’t mean dealing with change is easy. Finding ways to accept and cope can make these transitions smoother and less troubling.
Here are some helpful things to remember when confronted with change:
- First focus on where you have come from, and what have you already accomplished. Hopefully this will motivate you, and help you to understand how resilient you can be.
- What will you need moving forward i.e., more support, referral to services, what bumps in the road do you see moving forward?
- Plan for what could happen, but also focus on the present
- Be realistic that you may have to change your past promises
- You may have to assign jobs to others
- Set boundaries for what you know you can provide. You may not be able to balance all that you did before with the new care you are giving
- Open the line of communication with others- the Alzheimer Society can help facilitate this
