Bright Spark: Measuring Brain Activity to Predict Cognitive Health in MCI and AD
What is this Study about?
Early detection of brain changes is crucial to prevent cognitive decline and dementia. This study looks at how the brain’s electrical signals can be used to improve the early detection of Alzheimer’s disease. This study uses electroencephalography (EEG) to record the brain's electrical signals during simple tasks, with the hope of validating a measure that can improve early detection of Alzheimer’s disease.
What Will Happen in This Study?
At the first visit, participants will be asked to complete questionnaires, memory and thinking tasks, and an EEG test during which brain activity will be recorded. This visit will take 2.5 - 3 hours. Participants will then be asked to return for Visit 2 one to two weeks later to repeat the EEG test. This visit will last 1.5 hours. Participants may also be asked to return for follow-up visits 6, 12, and 18 months later. A person who has known the participant for at least the last five years will be asked to provide information about the participant's daily functioning.
Who is Eligible to Participate in this Study?
- Are between 60 and 85 years of age
- Have a diagnosis of amnestic mild cognitive impairment or mild dementia due to Alzheimer’s
- Have normal vision (with visual aids, if needed) and no other serious health issues
- Ability to speak English
