About the Alzheimer Society of Muskoka
Founded in 1983, the Alzheimer Society of Muskoka (ASM) is a registered charity committed to helping people with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias by:
- Providing care, support, information and education for people living with dementia
- Funding research to find a cure
- Advocacy through educating decision-makers about the need for improved health care services and qualified health care workers in Muskoka Parry Sound district to support people with dementia through advocacy and participation in the Dementia Networks.
- Increasing awareness of dementia and its impact on the whole family.
The Alzheimer Society of Muskoka offers Help for Today through our programs and services for people living with dementia and Hope for Tomorrow…® by funding research to find the cause and the cure.

Help for Today: Care and Support
The Alzheimer Society of Muskoka provides support programs, educational programs and resources as well as referral services to ease the burden of care and improve the quality of life for people living with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. Services are free for as long as they are needed. These include:
- Education, information sessions and resources
- Support groups
- Private and family supportive counselling
- Recreational programming

First Link® is an innovative program that connects people who are newly diagnosed and/or care partners with local health professionals across Ontario. Ontarians living with dementia receive information about a diagnosis, day-to-day living, positive approaches to care and how to prepare for the end of life. The program also provides individual support and counselling and links people to other Alzheimer Society programs and services. More information about First Link ®
MedicAlert® Safely Home® helps police find people with dementia who are missing. It is a nationwide program developed by the Alzheimer Society of Canada in partnership with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. For more information or to register, visit MedicAlert® Safely Home®
Minds in Motion® is a community-based social program that incorporates physical activity and mental stimulation for people with early to mid-stage signs of dementia and their care partners. Learn more about Minds in Motion®.
The First Link® Learning Series is made up of five distinct courses that are progressive in nature. Each course builds upon the other to provide participants with a comprehensive overview of dementia, coping strategies, resources and support systems. Hope for Tomorrow...®: Raising funds for world-class research
For 25 years, the Alzheimer Society of Muskoka has made financial contributions to research to find a cure for Alzheimer's disease as a top priority.
The Alzheimer Society Research Program, a collaborative effort between the Alzheimer Society of Canada (ASC), its provincial affiliates, partners and donors provides Research Grants and Training Awards to support the vital work of Canadian investigators in:
- Biomedical research into the causes and cure for Alzheimer's disease
- Research into social and psychological aspects of the disease, including caregiving, family support and long-term care.
The Alzheimer Society is also a co-founder and leads funder of the Tanz Centre for Research in Neurodegenerative Diseases (at the University of Toronto). The Centre provides international leadership in research, education and discovery related to neurodegenerative diseases.
Advocacy and Educating Decision Makers: No one needs to face this disease alone
Alzheimer's disease and other dementias have the potential to overwhelm Ontario's health care system. We campaign for improved health and social services and a workforce qualified to support people with dementia. Visit our education page for more information.
