Improving Dementia Care in Ontario Act
The province of Ontario has developed a framework to ensure that every Ontarian has access to quality dementia care.
Called Bill 121, the Improving Dementia Care Act, it is a major step forward in supporting those affected by dementia and Alzheimer’s.
It is an act that defines what person-centred dementia care is. It identifies measures to support dementia care providers and identifies how to facilitate equitable access to dementia care across Ontario, including strategies to increase awareness of programs such as the First Link program offered through the Alzheimer Society of Ontario.
The Act includes a $114 million investment into initiatives such as mandating dementia programs in long-term care homes, training staff in emotion-based care models, and ensuring cultural and religious needs of residents are met.
