Riding the Trails with Chuck
Meet one of our clients, Chuck. He loves cycling and owns a state-of-the-art road bike, which was being stored in his basement because he was anxious about riding alone.
Recreation therapist Jenna listened to his stories and also saw Chuck and his partner Doina’s cruiser bikes sitting in the garage for when they can still get out together.
For her next visit, Jenna packed her helmet and suggested a bike ride together on the nearby Georgian Trail.
"Once we got out on the trail, his entire demeanor changed. Chuck was singing songs, chatting, telling jokes, commenting on the beautiful scenery and greeting passersby," Jenna noted. "Out here, he would point out interesting parts of the trail, suggest various routes and confidently give me cycling tips. Now each week when I arrive to visit, Chuck is happy and excited to get out the bikes and hit the trails."
It's important for all of our clients to do what they love and thrive mentally as a result of these positive experiences.
"This is the goal of the In-Home Recreation program, getting to know the client on a personal level, and then choosing and gearing activities to them so they can be successful and happy," Jenna said.

When In-Home Recreation Co-Ordinator Jenna learned that client Chuck was an avid cycler, she came up with a plan to get him back out onto the trails. Exercise is a good way to boost your brain health, and putting Chuck's interests at the forefront, Jenna is able to attain her goals to provide one-on-one care.
This is just one of the ways we support people living with dementia in #simcoecounty.
