Supporting someone living with dementia can be both deeply meaningful and emotionally challenging. Our Roots of Resilience: Group Therapy program offers a supportive space to share, learn, and practice skills for those caring for a family member or friend living with dementia. 

Program Information

Date: Oct 6 - Dec 15 (10 weekly sessions, Mondays 4–5:30 PM)
Location: Alzheimer Society Head Office, Charlottetown

Limited to 10 participants (spots are filling up!)

This program uses Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to explore ways of managing stress, coping with difficult thoughts and feelings, and making choices guided by values. Each session will focus around a group check-in, learning new topics, skill-building exercises, group conversation, and planning steps to work on learned skills.

Week 1: Getting to Know You & Your Coping Tools

  • Share experiences, explore coping strategies, and get to know the group.

Week 2: What We Can and Can’t Control

  • Learn what’s in your control and practice mindfulness.

Week 3: Willingness vs. Avoiding Discomfort

  • ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Notice discomfort, explore willingness, and try grounding exercises.

Week 4: Understanding Your Thoughts

  • ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Understand thoughts and practice observing them mindfully.

Week 5: Stepping Back from Thoughts

  • ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Step back from thoughts and notice facts versus opinions.

Week 6: Discovering Your Values

  • ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Reflect on what matters most and explore your values.

Week 7: Living by Your Values

  • ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Check in on living by your values and practice stepping away from unhelpful thoughts.

Week 8: Making Space for Thoughts and Feelings

  • ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Make space for feelings and take actions that align with your values.

Week 9: Overcoming Barriers to Values-Based Living

  • ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Notice barriers to goals and practice mindfulness and self-kindness.

Week 10: Reflecting & Acknowledging Accomplishments

  • ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Review progress, reflect on experiences, acknowledge accomplishments.

Who is eligible to participate in the program?

To be eligible for the group therapy program, you must:

  • Be or become a First Link client
  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Be a family member or friend caring for a person living with dementia
  • Complete our four-question screener (administer by ASPEI staff)
  • Agree to the required assessment processes
