- Bequests
- Registered Plans (RRSPs and RRIFs)

Please note that information about each of these options is not intended as specific financial planning or legal advice. When considering one of these giving vehicles it is important to discuss these options with a trusted professional adviser to determine what is best suited for your financial situation.
Through the vision of our planned giving donors, we can make long-term investments in enhancing the quality of life for those living with dementia. Making a provision for a future gift ensures the sustainability of the Alzheimer Society of Niagara Region’s education and support programs for years to come.
As our small way of saying thank you for such a thoughtful and significant gift we will gratefully place a plaque on our Wall of Honour.
Some of the benefits of making a planned gift to the Alzheimer Society Niagara Foundation include:
- Tax advantages under current laws.
- Your giving can be tailored to your personal and financial circumstances.
- Your donation is made from assets, not current income.
- Gifts are planned today for distribution at some time in the future.
- Most of the gifts involve planning but are easy to arrange. Your financial or estate adviser will be happy to help you complete your gift.
Donating Stocks or Securities
Thanks to the Federal Budget of May 2006, you no longer pay capital gains tax on gifts of publicly traded securities and mutual funds. If you own stocks or mutual funds that have grown in value and sell them, you will be required to pay tax on 50 percent of the capital gain. By donating them to the Alzheimer Society Niagara Foundation, you will eliminate paying any capital gains tax, making this one of the most cost effective ways to donate. Learn more about the benefits of donating securities at Canadahelps.org.
- Download our Stocks & Securities Donation Form to fill out and take to your broker.
- Donate securities quickly and easily online through our partner Canadahelps.org, a site dedicated to helping non-profit organizations accept secure online donations. Please note that this option deducts a fee of approximately 3 percent from your donation. A charitable tax receipt for the full amount of your donation will be sent to you directly via email from Canadahelps.org.

Bequests
Just as you may have supported the Alzheimer Society of Niagara Region during your lifetime, you can continue your support of our mission by including a provision for us in your Will. A bequest in a Will may specify a certain sum of money, a particular asset, or a portion of an estate, to be donated to the Alzheimer Society Niagara Foundation.
Did you know your Will can be a powerful tool for change? It is more than a legal means to distribute your assets it is a powerful means of making a difference for people living with dementia and the people that care for them in your community. You don't have to choose between loved ones and the cause you care about. It is possible to leave a gift for charity and still take care of those you love.
Will Power(TM)
The Alzheimer Society Niagara Foundation is one of the founding partners in Will Power™ a public education effort aimed at empowering Canadians to leave a charitable gift in their Will.
CAGP Foundation research shows that only 5 percent of Canadians leave a charitable gift in their Will. The goal of the Will Power™campaign is to work closely with Canadian donors to raise that figure to 8.5 percent by 2030, which could translate into as much as $40 billion to advance the causes Canadians care about. Imagine the difference we could all make!

Why I Give - A Care Partner's Story
Read Cathy's full story, and discover why she has chosen to support the Alzheimer Society Niagara Foundation with a legacy gift in her Will.
My name is Cathy. I am 68 years old and I have been living with dementia since 1980 when my mother was diagnosed with the strange sounding disease called Alzheimer’s. My mother passed away in 1994 but Alzheimer’s was tracking my family. In 2015 my sisters, Barbara and Lillian, were both diagnosed with the now familiar Alzheimer’s disease. My sister Barbara has passed away and Lillian is now in long term care but thanks to the Alzheimer Society, their story and mine as a caregiver, was vastly different from my mother’s.

Registered Plans (RRSP's and RRIF's)
Many Canadians have savings in Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSP) and Registered Retirement Income Funds (RRIF) which can often create large tax liabilities in the year of death, since the entire amount of the plan is included in your income in one year. Arranging for a donation of all or a percentage of your RRSP or RRIF to the Alzheimer Society Niagara Foundation upon your death is an effective way to reduce the taxes payable by your estate.
Contact your insurance agent, accountant or financial adviser to learn more information about how to take full advantage of gifts of registered plans.
Life Insurance
A gift of life insurance is a creative way for you to build our long-term financial strength without diminishing your own - even a relatively small commitment can provide significant benefits for the Alzheimer Society of Niagara Region. There are many ways for you to make a gift using life insurance:
- You may donate a paid-up life insurance policy that has now outlived its original purpose by naming Alzheimer Society Niagara Foundation as the owner and beneficiary of your policy and receive an immediate tax receipt for the cash surrender value of the policy.
- You may gift an existing policy on which premiums are still being paid by transferring ownership to Alzheimer Society Niagara Foundation and receiving tax receipts for all future premium payments.
- You may make a gift by purchasing a new policy on your life, naming Alzheimer Society Niagara Foundation as the owner and beneficiary and receiving tax receipts for all future premium payments.
- You may also choose to retain ownership of your policy and name Alzheimer Society Niagara Foundation as the direct beneficiary and, upon your passing, your estate will receive a tax receipt for the value of the policy
A gift of life insurance, by either making the Alzheimer Society Niagara Foundation the owner and beneficiary of an existing policy or purchasing a new policy and making annual premium payments, has many benefits. It allows donors to make a significant gift at a fraction of the value from their disposable income. The annual payments are generally modest and eligible for tax credit, giving annual income tax relief.
Endowments
An endowment fund is like a charitable investment fund, where a donation is permanently invested and the income earned each year is used to support the Alzheimer Society of Niagara Region for a purpose that the donor usually designates.
Building an endowment is essential because it ensures that the Alzheimer Society has a stable source of funding to provide specialized programs in the Niagara Region that enhance the quality of life of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease, other dementias and all who love and care for them. With a minimum gift of $10,000 a named endowment can be established in honour or in memory of a donor, family member or loved one. It is a deeply personal statement of who you are (or the impact a loved one has had on your life) and what you believe should be supported long into the future.
Charitable Annuities
A charitable gift annuity can benefit both you and the Alzheimer Society Niagara Foundation. Depending on your age, a charitable annuity allows you to save tax, enjoy a guaranteed income for life and give a significant gift today. This type of gift might be appealing if you:
- Are over the age of 65
- Have accumulated wealth and do not need this portion of your capital to leave for your surviving spouse or heirs
- Are concerned about the amount of tax you pay on your interest-bearing investments
- Wish to increase your after-tax disposable income
- Like the security of fixed, guaranteed income
- Would like worry-free management of your investments
How does a charitable gift annuity work?
A charitable gift annuity is a contractual arrangement with a commercial annuity provider. It will provide you with a tax-preferred annual income guaranteed for life or a specific number of years. Charitable gift annuities are structured in the same way as regular commercial annuities, but they offer distinct advantages due to a charity’s tax-free status.
Give at Work
Payroll deductions
Organizations can make the Alzheimer Society Niagara Foundation their charity of choice through payroll deductions. Employees can make a donation each pay or as a one-time annual gift.
Some organizations use third-party charities to manage payroll deductions, such as Benevity or United Way. Contact your Human Resources department for more information.
Matching Gift programs
Many companies encourage their employees, spouses, or retirees to contribute to charities by offering a "matching gift" program. The company donates funds to match your contribution to the same charity. Matching Gift programs increase the value of your gift and make greater impact in your community. By taking advantage of your company's Matching Gift program, you may be able to double or even triple the amount of your contribution.
Find out if your employer has a Matching Gift program by checking with your Human Resources department.
Donate a car
Your car donation holds monetary and sentimental value. It can be an empowering way to give to the Alzheimer Society.
Alzheimer's disease and other dementias cause changes that affect a person's ability to drive a motor vehicle safely. Eventually, people with Alzheimer's disease must stop driving, as it will no longer be safe.
At the Alzheimer Society we provide support as individuals living with dementia and their families cope with this significant loss.
Some people find some comfort in knowing that they are giving back to the programs and services that support them by donating their loved one's car.
