Online Education: Dementia and Medical Assistance in Dying Session on Tuesday, January 21, 2025 at 1:30 PM

Join us on January 21, 2025, for our latest AlzEd session!

This online education session will provide an overview of Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD), how the program works and informative facts for all Nova Scotians to be aware of. The expert presenters from Nova Scotia Health will answer common questions about MAiD and dementia and share relevant resources to help people make informed decisions.

John McCarthy

John McCarthy has worked with the Nova Scotia health authority since 2004, and has been the MAiD Program Lead since 2017.  While most of his background is in health system project management and governance, the prospect of taking on the role with MAiD was a welcome opportunity, and a chance to work in a clinically focused way.  In his spare time, John volunteers with small, community-based organizations on improving governance, event management, and fundraising, as well as coaching youth sports.

Shiloh Gossen

Shiloh Gossen is the Co-Medical Lead for the Medical Assistance in Dying Program and a MAiD assessor. She has been in this position since December 2023. She has an interest in working with patients requesting MAiD where capacity or mental health concerns are at play. She is a psychiatrist by training, having completed her medical degree at Western University (2018) and her psychiatric residency at Dalhousie University (2023). Aside from her work with MAiD, she also works as a psychiatrist in the QEII Emergency Department where she is the Clinical Academic Lead of the Psychiatric Emergency Service and has a private practice focusing on veterans/active-duty military personnel. Shiloh was born and raised in Windsor, Ontario, but now makes her home in Halifax with her husband Spencer and their German Shepherd, Sam.

Max Maier

Max Maier is the Clinical Services Manager for Medical Assistance in Dying. He has been in this role since November of 2023. He supports the day to day activities of the MAiD program across the province from their centralized office in Halifax. Prior to this, Max worked as a Team Lead for several years with Supply Chain for the Clinical Product Coordinators who process and implement HealthPRO contracts for goods and services used by Nova Scotia Health. Before being a team lead with supply chain, Max was a Human Tissue Bank Specialist with the Regional Tissue Bank here in Halifax, and worked as a Cardiac Perfusionist at the Halifax Infirmary. Max grew up in Cape Breton but now lives in Halifax with his two kids, Aodhan (Aiden) and Evangeline.
