The Alzheimer Society of Thunder Bay offers compassionate, person-centred programs and services for individuals living with dementia, their families, care partners, and healthcare professionals.

Education Coordinator

From the time of diagnosis and throughout the progression of the disease, our team provides access to education, programs, system navigation, and connection to community resources. We also support professionals through dementia-specific training and collaboration to enhance quality of care across our region.

First Link® Services

First Link® is a direct referral program connecting individuals and families to the Alzheimer Society of Thunder Bay as early as possible in the dementia journey. Through this program, individuals are supported with access to health services, education, and community resources — empowering them to make informed decisions at every stage.

In addition to information and support, First Link® helps advocate for timely care and tailored services, ensuring that families feel empowered and supported throughout their journey.

Core Offerings

Learning Series

This multi-session educational series provides practical tools and compassionate guidance for every stage of the disease. Participants can also connect and share experiences with others on similar journeys.

Support Groups

These monthly sessions offer safe, meaningful space for both people living with dementia and their care partners to connect, share, and support one another. Current offerings include:

Lunch Club - This volunteer-run program is offered monthly at Applebee’s and provides a relaxed, welcoming environment for registered clients to enjoy lunch, connect with peers, and share experiences.

Resources

First Link® clients have access to a variety of resources, including:

- Books, pamphlets, and local support materials

- Online tools such as Alzeducate.ca – a free online education platform for caregivers and professional Additional Supports

Recreation Therapy Kits

Designed to foster engagement and emotional well-being, these kits support individuals living with dementia, isolated seniors, and care partners. Kits include guided activities that can be done from home.

Community-Based Programs

Minds in Motion® 

An eight-week wellness program for individuals with early to mid-stage dementia and their care partners. Each session includes: 1 hour of physical activity and 1 hour of cognitive and social engagement. Sessions are held at the Oliver Road Recreation Centre and aim to promote laughter, connection, and new friendships.

The Art Program 

An expressive outlet using creative arts like painting, collage, and poetry to spark memory, build social connection and promote emotional well-being.

Our last session took place at the Thunder Bay Art Gallery and concluded with a public exhibit. Future dates and locations are based on demand and participation.

Education

The Alzheimer Society of Thunder Bay offers a variety of educational opportunities for people living with dementia, care partners, health care professionals, and the broader community. Sessions can be tailored to suit specific needs, audiences, or topics, helping ensure that the information is meaningful and relevant.

GPA® (Gentle Persuasive Approaches)

GPA® is an innovative and interactive dementia care education program that equips healthcare staff with practical techniques to respond respectfully and effectively to challenging behaviours in dementia care. GPA promotes person-centred care and enhances safety for both clients and staff.

Dementia Education - Online and In Person

Online Learning

The Alzheimer Society of Thunder Bay offers guidance on helpful tools to support safety and independence, including recommended devices and products from resources like alzstore.ca and MedicAlert® Safely Home®.

We also encourage ongoing learning through Alzeducate.ca, an online education platform created by the Alzheimer Society of Ontario. Alzeducate offers free, self-paced modules for caregivers, healthcare professionals, and anyone looking to learn more about dementia. Topics range from understanding the disease to practical strategies for support.

Our team can provide customized education sessions based on your group's interests. Popular topics include:
