The Ride for Mom

Why Joanne and Terry Do It

For the last 17 years, Joanne Belke and Terry Wise have led the Ride for Mom event to raise funds and awareness for the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories (AS AB/NT). Ride for Mom is an annual motorcycle ride fundraising event in Whitecourt, Alberta.

This cause is near and dear to their hearts because they have seen firsthand how this disease can affect a family.

“We call it Ride for Mom, but it’s for moms, dads, sisters, brothers – whoever is affected by dementia,” says Terry, who lost his mom to Alzheimer’s. “We just want you to remember your loved one.”

Joanne’s mother was diagnosed in 2007. She says a phone call to AS AB/NT changed her world. “I didn’t know where to go or what to do. They were my rock – they helped me, and they helped my family.” After her mom passed away with Alzheimer’s disease, Joanne heard about Terry’s motorcycle event and decided she wanted to help.

The rest is history. Together they lead the event, which has raised over $240,000 for AS AB/NT. The funds go towards dementia research, education, and support services for people living with dementia, their family members and care partners.

In Recognition

It is our great privilege to acknowledge the passion and leadership of Terry, Joanne, and everyone involved in Ride for Mom with the 2022 Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Health Award.

George Andrews, AS AB/NT CEO, says Ride for Mom truly demonstrates what’s at the heart of philanthropy. “It is much more than just a fundraiser. It also promotes awareness and gets the word out to others that we’re here to help,” says George.
