The 2018 recipient of the Pauline Spatz Leadership Award is Mrs. Valérie Dubocquet, pictured here with Huguette Duguay, First Link Coordinator of the Alzheimer Society, and André Savoie, Board Member of the Alzheimer Society.
The award was presented to Mrs. Valérie Dubocquet of Paquetville at the Memory Café in Tracadie, in acknowledgement of her support to Alzheimer’s research for many years.
Before marrying the love of her life, Charles Dubocquet, the couple agreed to wait to marry so they could focus on caring for their mothers. Charles’ mother was terminally ill, and Valérie’s mother was living with Alzheimer’s disease. Valérie’s mother required intensive care, leaving little time for respite. The couple ended up waiting 16 years before marrying.
When they were married, the two began writing poems and making music. They donated the proceeds from their craft to multiple charities, one of which was the Alzheimer Society of New Brunswick. Even after the passing of her beloved Charles, Valérie continues to support and fundraise for the society.
A skilled craftsperson, she makes pottery and weaves fabric that she turns into bookmarks and scarves. To date, she has donated more than $6,000 to the Alzheimer Society of New Brunswick.
