Today in History

1966 - Star Trek Makes its Television Debut. The popular science fiction television series created by Gene Roddenberry was about the adventures of the crew of starship USS Enterprise. The starship was commanded by Captain James T. Kirk, who was assisted by Science Officer Spock and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Leonard McCoy. The first episode of the series, which is now known as The Original Series (TOS), was called the Man Trap and aired on NBC.

Born this Day

David Arquette (born on September 8, 1971) is an American actor and former professional wrestler. He is best known for his role as Dewey Riley in the slasher film franchise Scream, for which he won a Teen Choice Award and two Blockbuster Entertainment Awards.

Alecia Beth Moore Hart, known professionally as Pink (born on September 8, 1979) is an American singer, songwriter and actress. During her teens, Pink was a member of the girl group Choice. Her first solo studio album, Can't Take Me Home, was certified double-platinum in the United States.

Peter Sellers (born on September 8, 1925)  was an English actor and comedian. He first came to prominence performing in the BBC Radio comedy series The Goon Show. He was also featured on a number of hit comic songs and became known to a worldwide audience through his many film roles, among them Chief Inspector Clouseau in The Pink Panther series.

2015 - Queen Elizabeth II becomes longest reigning British monarch. She broke the record set by Queen Victoria, who ascended to the throne on June 20, 1837, and reigned for 63 years, 7 months and 2 days.

Born this Day

Adam Sandler (born on September 9, 1966) is an American actor, comedian, and filmmaker. Sandler first gained popularity as a cast member on *Saturday Night Live* in the early 1990s. He went on to star in numerous hit comedies such as “Billy Madison,” “Happy Gilmore,” and “The Waterboy.” Despite being known for his comedic roles, Sandler has also received critical acclaim for his dramatic performances in films like “Punch-Drunk Love” and “Uncut Gems.” 

Hugh Grant (born on September 9, 1960) is a British actor and film producer. Grant rose to international fame in the 1990s with films like “Four Weddings and a Funeral”, “Notting Hill”, and “Love Actually”. In addition to his film work, Grant has appeared in dramas and television series, earning praise for his versatility. Off-screen, he's also known for his advocacy work and political engagement.

Michael Bublé (born on September 9, 1975) is a Canadian singer, songwriter, and actor. Bublé gained international fame with his 2003 self-titled debut album and later with hits like "Haven't Met You Yet" and "Feeling Good." Throughout his career, Bublé has won numerous awards, including multiple Grammy Awards, and remains a popular figure in both jazz and mainstream music.

2014 - First Invictus Games Held. The international games bring together wounded armed forces personnel and veterans who compete in athletic competitions. The 2014 Invictus Games were held at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London, England. 300 competitors from 13 countries participated in the games. This year, the Invictus Games will be held in Düsseldorf, Germany, taking place from September 9th-16th.

Born this Day

Colin Firth (born on September 10, 1960) is a British. He gained widespread recognition for his role as Mr. Darcy in the BBC adaptation of “Pride and Prejudice.” Firth went on to star in critically acclaimed films like “The King's Speech,” for which he won an Academy Award for Best Actor, “A Single Man,” and “Bridget Jones's Diary.” 

Ryan Phillippe (born on September 10, 1974) is an American actor who rose to fame in the late 1990s with his role in “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and as Sebastian Valmont in “Cruel Intentions.” Throughout his career, Phillippe has appeared in a range of films and TV shows, including “Gosford Park,” “Flags of Our Fathers,” and “Shooter.” He has continued to work in both film and television, including recent roles in shows like “Big Sky.”

Guy Ritchie (born on September 10, 1968) is a British film director, producer, and screenwriter. He made a name for himself with his breakthrough movie “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels” and continued his success with “Snatch,” both of which became cult classics. He has also directed high-profile films like “Sherlock Holmes” and “Aladdin.”

Richard Melville Hall (born September 11, 1965), known professionally as Moby, is an American musician, songwriter, singer, producer, and animal rights activist. He has sold 20 million records worldwide; including "Move (You Make Me Feel So Good)", "Feeling So Real", and "James Bond Theme (Moby Re-Version)".

Christopher Bridges (born September 11, 1977), known professionally as Ludacris, is an American rapper and actor. His singles "Southern Hospitality" (featuring Pharrell) and "What's Your Fantasy" (featuring Shawnna), became top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. He also has appearances in the films 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003), Crash (2004), and Hustle & Flow (2005).

Taraji Penda Henson (born September 11, 1970) is an American actress. She studied acting at Howard University and began her Hollywood career in guest roles on several television shows before making her breakthrough in Baby Boy (2001).

1992 - First African American Woman goes into Space. Mae C. Jemison, a physician, was a Mission Specialist on STS-47 which was the 50th space flight of NASA’s Space Shuttle Program. It was the space shuttle Endeavour’s second flight. During over 190 hours she spent in space, she conducted experiments on weightlessness and motion sickness.

Born this Day

Paul Walker (born on September 12, 1973) was an American actor. He began his acting career in the early '90s with appearances in TV shows and films like "Pleasantville" and "Varsity Blues." He was best known for his role as Brian O'Conner in the Fast & Furious franchise. The Fast & Furious franchise has brought in $7.47 billion at the worldwide box office.

Emmy Rossum (born September 12, 1986) is an American actress, director, and singer. Her most notable role to date has been as Fiona Gallagher in the acclaimed TV series “Shameless” (2011-2019). In addition to her acting, Emmy has ventured into directing and producing television since the mid-2010s. She recently took the spotlight once again by starring in and contributing to the production of the 2022 series “Angelyne”.

Jennifer Hudson (born September 12, 1981) gained widespread recognition as a finalist on the third season of American Idol in 2004. However, her breakout moment came when she portrayed Effie White in the film adaptation of the musical "Dreamgirls" (2006), earning her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and a Grammy Award. Since then, Hudson has made numerous hit albums, including her self-titled debut and "I Remember Me."

1933 - A Woman is Elected to New Zealand Parliament for the first time. Elizabeth McCombs won the by-elections for the parliamentary seat of Lyttelton, which was held by her husband before he died in August 1933. New Zealand extended suffrage to women in 1893.

Roald Dahl (born on 13 September, 1916) was a British popular author of children's literature and short stories, a poet, and a wartime fighter ace. His books have sold more than 300 million copies worldwide. Dahl has been called "one of the greatest storytellers for children of the 20th century". His works include ’James and the Giant Peach’, ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’, and ’Fantastic Mr. Fox.’

Niall Horan (born on 13 September, 1993) is an Irish singer-songwriter. He rose to prominence as a member of the boy band One Direction, formed in 2010 on the singing competition The X Factor. The group released five albums and went on to become one of the best-selling boy bands of all time.

Fiona Apple McAfee-Maggart (born on 13 September, 1977) is an American singer-songwriter. She released five albums from 1996 to 2020, all of which reached the top 20 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart. Apple has received numerous awards and nominations, including three Grammy Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards, and a Billboard Music Award. She is known for her songs “Criminal”, and “Fast As You Can.”

1985 - The Golden Girls Make Their Television Debut. The popular American sitcom about 4 single and older women living together in a Miami, Florida house ran for 6 seasons on NBC. The main characters in the show were played by Beatrice Arthur, Estelle Getty, Rue McClanahan, and Betty White, each of whom won the Emmys for their acting in the show. The series also won 2 Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Comedy Series and 3 Golden Globe Awards for Best Television Series.

Born this Day

Amy Winehouse (born September 14 1983) is a British singer-songwriter who rose to fame with her debut album "Frank" in 2003, which showcased her unique jazz-infused voice and songwriting abilities. However, it was her 2006 album "Back to Black" that catapulted her to international stardom, earning her five Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year for the hit single "Rehab." 

John Edward Hawkins (born September 14, 1910) was an English actor who worked on stage and in film from the 1930s until the 1970s. One of the most popular British film stars of the 1950s, he was known for his portrayal of military men. His appearances included “Birds of Prey” (1930), “The Lodger” (1932) (starring Ivor Novello), “The Good Companions” (1933),

George Harvey Presnell (born September 14, 1933) was an American actor and singer. He began his career in the mid-1950s as a classical baritone, singing with orchestras and opera companies throughout the United States.

Make sure you have proper footwear and the area is clear. Because physical exercise can be strenuous and may cause risk of injury, we urge you to obtain a physical examination from a doctor before participating in any exercise activities and participate only as much as you feel comfortable. These online exercises are intended to encourage you to gently move your body – so don’t push yourself beyond what feels okay. Participating in exercise activities included in the Alzheimer Society of Niagara Region's activity site is done entirely at your own risk.
