Alzheimer's Awareness Month:
Promoting Brain Health and Dementia Risk Reduction
January marks Alzheimer's Awareness Month in Canada, a critical time for raising public understanding about Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. This year, we are focusing on the importance of brain health and evidence-based strategies for reducing dementia risk.
The Growing Impact of Dementia
Projections indicate a significant increase in dementia cases in the coming years. By 2050, it's estimated that over 1.7 million Canadians will be living with dementia. Over 62,000 individuals in Alberta and Northwest Territories are currently living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. The rates of dementia in Alberta are expected to rise by 286% by 2050. However, research suggests that proactive measures can help mitigate this trend.
Dr. George Andrews, CEO of the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories, says the need for awareness and action is crucial. "We want to empower individuals with the knowledge that lifestyle changes can significantly reduce the risk of dementia. Our awareness month reduce your risk campaign provides practical, evidence-based actions that anyone can take to support their brain health.”
Risk Reduction Through Lifestyle
Recent studies have demonstrated that lifestyle changes can play a crucial role in reducing dementia risk. These habits can be effective at any age and include:
- Maintaining a balanced, nutritious diet
- Engaging in regular physical exercise
- Ensuring adequate sleep
- Pursuing lifelong learning opportunities
- Fostering social connections
- Avoiding concussion and brain injury
- Monitoring your heart and managing blood pressure
- Seeking treatment for depression
- Managing medical conditions like diabetes and obesity
- Protecting and supporting your hearing
By implementing these strategies, individuals can potentially lower their risk of developing dementia and contribute to overall brain health.
