Everyday partners in Dementia support
Meet April and Clark
As monthly donors, April and Clark have made a very conscious effort to be philanthropic in their everyday lives, demonstrating a thoughtful and structured approach to giving by allocating a part of their monthly budget to charitable causes. As a family, April and Clark have chosen to support a handful of charities that resonate with them, and the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories is fortunate to be one of their chosen charities. However, they are not just donors; as the Major Gift & Planned Giving Officer, April offers a rare glimpse into the Society's inner workings.
The Grindheims' decision to support the Society is rooted in a personal connection. April and Clark both have families that have faced the challenges of Alzheimer's and dementia, giving them an intimate understanding of the support needed. "Our family does have experience with family members who have had Alzheimer's and other dementias. So, we know how lonely that journey can be and how there can be a lack of support”. This firsthand experience, combined with her professional role, fueled the couple's decision to commit to regular donations. After learning about the society's support programs, as well as speaking firsthand with those who regularly attend them, “Clark and I were compelled to make this a key part of our monthly budget".
April’s behind-the-scenes perspective into the Society also gave her and Clark confidence about the impact of their donations and that it was being used for maximum impact. From transitioning to digital media to save on printing costs to offering virtual services and finding free venues for support groups, the Society strategically manages its resources. "We (AS AB/NT) are also very transparent in reporting back to donors on how their money is being spent and explaining why we need funding for different programs.”
The Grindheims' approach to monthly giving is particularly noteworthy. April likens it to a simple yet effective strategy: "Monthly donations are like setting a crockpot – you set it and forget it. This method of giving allows the Society to plan into the future, giving a predictable stream of support for future investment and program budgeting."
Through their consistent support, April and Clark Grindheim exemplify what it means to be everyday partners in dementia support and advocacy. Their commitment goes beyond financial support; it represents a long-term, strategic investment in bringing support for Alzheimer's and other dementias to the forefront.
