Welcome to Cognitive Connections, a podcast by the Alzheimer's Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories. Each episode will bring you thought-provoking discussions with experts, researchers, and people within this community. At the Alzheimer's Society, we believe in the power of human connection and aim to create a safe space where we can discuss the challenges, triumphs, and advancements in the field of dementia.
Understanding Dementia's Landscape
In the second episode, we speak with Arlene Huhn, Client Services Team Manager from the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories, who explores the profound impact of human connection in dementia care.
Dementia is a complex condition that affects millions worldwide. The Alzheimer's Society recognizes the significance of human connection in creating a safe space for discussing challenges, successes, and advancements related to dementia care.
"It's so nice to walk into a room where you can say something and the person across the table from you, eye to eye, shake their head and say oh yeah, I've been there," Arlene shares.
The Society offers a range of services and programs to assist families affected by dementia. These services include an online educational series, one-on-one consultations, and care partner support groups.
Impact of Care Partner Support Groups
Care partner support groups emerge as a cornerstone of dementia care. These groups offer a safe space for care partners to share experiences, learn from one another, and gain emotional support. The shared camaraderie profoundly impacts the emotional well-being of care partners as they navigate challenges together.
"The stigma of dementia has decreased, so more people are willing to talk about it, more people share, but we still find many, many people living with dementia feel scared, nervous, ashamed to share their diagnosis," Arlene acknowledges. "It takes a community to help support a person living with dementia and that we can all be care partners in that journey."
Eradicating Dementia Stigma
As understanding grows, societal perceptions of dementia can shift toward greater compassion and empathy. For those interested in changing minds and learning how you can help us raise awareness and fight the stigma against dementia, the Alzheimer Society's "Change Minds" campaign is a great place to start.
A Unified Approach to Dementia Care
"We're here to support you, so don't hesitate to reach out to us."
We encourage individuals and care partners to connect with the Society; we are here to help.. We provide information, support and education and advocate for people living with dementia. Through our seven regional offices, we offer Help for Today through our programs and services, and Hope for Tomorrow by funding research to find the cause and the cure.
