Volunteer Spotlight - Jag
Get to know one of our volunteers, Jag, and why he gives his time to the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories.
Jag became a client of the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories and later started volunteering. Get to know Jag a bit more and why he volunteers:
How do you volunteer with the Society and how long have you been a volunteer? I volunteer as a co-facilitator in the Young Onset - Early stages support group…I started just over a year after my wife, Carolyn, passed away, so around June 2023 I started [training] and then I came and started co-facilitating in Fall 2023.
What is your volunteer role like? Groups are once a month for about an hour and a half, sometimes longer. I don't have to do anything in between other than review new group member names and their person's diagnosis...the time commitment isn't crazy but it helps with my grieving process, which really is a lifelong process. It is about talking about things, hearing what others are going through, and trying to help other people because only so many people have this kind of experience.
Why did you decide to start volunteering? I didn't really understand support groups until I was in a support group and then it was like wow I am in this situation and no one can understand me, but these people can. It's really nice to still be part of that and contribute. I had a positive experience, and it was beneficial in many ways to be part of the group…If I can help people with this unfortunate but unique experience then that’s a good thing and then I also realized it might be beneficial for myself…one of the most powerful things in life is to help other people.
What would be your advice to someone thinking about volunteering? There's no downside to volunteering. All the people here at the Society are here with a shared goal of making things better for people living with dementia and the people associated with them. Ultimately, if it doesn't work, it doesn't work, but give it a shot because you never know how you are going to help someone else and you never know how you could actually help yourself in the process. And the only way to do that, is to try. So, give it a shot.
