Dementia doesn’t discriminate and neither do we.
The Alzheimer Society stands united with the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and continuously strives to foster an environment that is a safe space for all clients to be their true selves so they can receive the best dementia support possible.
Creating a Welcoming, Affirming Environment
When providing care to a person living with dementia, whether you or they self-identify as part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, or not, there are many steps you can take to ensure that you are creating a safe space.
You can create a welcoming, affirming environment by:
🌈 Using gender-neutral pronouns such as they/them.
🌈 Avoiding making assumptions about their partners and/or spouse.
🌈 Respecting gender identity and understanding that transitioning is different for everyone. There is no right or wrong way to express themselves.
🌈 Demonstrating a comfort level with sexual and gender diversity by welcoming and normalizing disclosure of sexuality, gender identity, and expression.
2SLGBTQIA+ Resources
If you are a care partner of a person living with dementia, or you are a person living with dementia, that identifies in the LGBTQ2S+ community, there are many resources available to you.
