Inaugural Dementia-Friendly Communities awards
British Columbians to be honoured at inaugural Dementia-Friendly Communities awards.
This January is Alzheimer’s Awareness month, a time for Canadians to reflect on the courage and resilience of people who are affected by dementia. During this month, we’ve been pleased to highlight the inspiring stories of amazing British Columbians on the dementia journey who continue to find moments of joy, peace and happiness (you can read their stories here).
We are also delighted to announce that some incredible individuals, groups and organizations here in British Columbians have been nominated in the inaugural Dementia-Friendly Communities awards! The awards were created by the Dementia-Friendly Canada project and are designed to recognize the phenomenal work that is being done across the country to make Canada a place that is inclusive and supportive for people affected by dementia.
There are six different categories: voice, ally, grassroots group, municipality, small to medium organization and large organization. The British Columbians nominees are:
Dementia-Friendly Voice: Jim Mann and Myrna Norman.
Dementia-Friendly Ally: Jill Lawlor.
Dementia-Friendly Grassroots Award: Dementia Friendly Task Group.
Dementia-Friendly Municipality: The District of West Vancouver and the Township of Langley.
Dementia-Friendly Organization (Large): Vancouver International Airport.
You can learn more about the nominees and their work, as well as hear from nominees from across Canada, by tuning into the awards livestream on Facebook at 9 a.m. PST this Sunday, January 15. The recording will also be posted to the Dementia-Friendly Canada webpage.
We would like to send our heartfelt congratulations and thanks to all the nominees: you are instrumental in building a dementia-friendly Canada and we are so inspired by your dedication, innovation and generosity. Thank you for making a difference.
