Day-of-event volunteers make the IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s a reality
This National Volunteer Week, we join organizations across Canada to applaud the volunteers who enable us to organize events and provide support to people affected by dementia. From April 25-30, read stories shared by volunteers, Society staff and clients that celebrate the positive impact volunteers have on our communities.
On Sunday, May 29, the Alzheimer Society of B.C. will once again host the annual IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s. After a two-year hiatus on in-person events, participants will be walking in person again in communities around B.C. to raise funds and awareness. Day-of-event volunteers make Alzheimer Society of B.C. events like the IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s possible.
Volunteers across the province work alongside the Alzheimer Society of B.C. to host this event in approximately 20 different communities around the province. Each Walk is planned and organized by a volunteer committee and then executed with the help of local day-of-event volunteers. Whether they are setting up, greeting, registering participants, route marshalling, assisting vendor stations or cleaning up, day-of-event volunteers provide crucial support to ensure successful local events.
Together with the organizing committees, day-of-event volunteers help make the event a safe, fun and meaningful opportunity for participants to walk in honour of people in their lives affected by dementia. Year after year, the IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s is an inspiring example of how communities can come together to create a dementia-friendly society.
Madison Weins shares her experience as a previous day-of-event volunteer. “The day of the event was a meaningful experience where everyone came in support of similar values and worked together towards one goal. It was fun and full of upbeat energy that encouraged participants and I enjoyed cheering on friendly faces at the finish line. Volunteering at this event re-established my desire and drive to continue helping in the community. I really felt like I was making a difference.”
The IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s on Sunday, May 29 is the largest fundraiser for the Alzheimer Society of B.C. Funds raised support programs and services that help British Columbians at any stage in the dementia journey. Programs and services like the First Link® Dementia Helpline, dementia support groups and Minds in Motion® offer people affected by dementia support and an opportunity to connect with a larger community.
