The Alzheimer Society of B.C. seeks new members to join its Board of Directors

The Alzheimer Society of B.C.’s mission is to ensure people affected by dementia are not alone, by educating and mobilizing a broader community of care around them and supporting valuable research into the disease and people living with it.
It is an exciting time for the organization, and we are looking to bolster the skillset on our existing Board with new faces and perspectives. We are currently developing an ambitious new multi-year strategic plan, which is slated to be finalized by September of this year.
Who are the Board of Directors?
We are a governance board with 10 members, 90 staff and a budget of approximately $11.6 million. The Society works closely with the provincial government, Alzheimer Societies across Canada, researchers and communities of practice. The Society’s range of activities include providing programs and services, advocacy work, awareness-raising campaigns, and enabling research.
The voices and needs of people with lived experience are at the centre of what we do – and we take our guidance from them. We are carefully considering the lessons learned during these last two years of the pandemic: we are now making better use of technology to deliver services to more people in more places while recognizing the value and impact of in-person services, and we continually seek to understand how we can best position our organization to be of service to British Columbians who are on the dementia journey.
Who are we looking for?
With several board members’ terms ending over the next six to 18 months, we hope to recruit up to five new board members with the following skills: financial, marketing/communications/branding, governance and/or health care. As a Board, we also want to ensure we have representation from people with lived experience – both people living with dementia and caregivers. If you have lived experience of dementia, we invite you to apply. We encourage applications from people in all health regions of the province (in particular, the North and Interior), as well as Indigenous people, BIPOC and racialized individuals, people of minority sexual orientation or gender identity and others with the skills and knowledge to productively engage with diverse communities.
What do Board members do?
Board members are expected to attend quarterly board meetings and, if assigned, quarterly committee meetings – current committees include Finance & Audit and Governance. They will also need to attend an annual strategic planning session, infrequent ad-hoc board meetings as required, as well as fundraising and awareness raising events during the year. Additionally, board members sometimes provide guidance to groups within the organization in several areas such as marketing and communications, depending on the issue and the Board member’s particular experience.
