The Alzheimer Society of B.C.’s mission is to mobilize a broad community of care and support research into the disease to ensure people affected by dementia are not alone. We are at an exciting time in the organization, and are looking to bolster the skillset on our existing Board.

Who are the Board of Directors?
Our dynamic governance board is comprised of 10 dedicated members who collaborate with a team of 100 passionate staff and manage a budget of approximately $13.5 million. At the Alzheimer Society of B.C., we work closely with the provincial government, Alzheimer Societies across Canada, esteemed researchers and diverse communities of practice. Our comprehensive approach encompasses a wide range of activities, including providing impactful programs and services, leading advocacy efforts, conducting awareness-raising campaigns and supporting groundbreaking research.

Who are we looking for?
This year, the Nominations Committee is seeking three candidates for a three-year term to join our Board of Directors, commencing September 2024.
We are actively recruiting candidates who have strong competencies/experience in one or more of these areas:
- Dementia experience - client, caregiver, family and community.
- Finance, risk, audit process.
- Human resources working with executive level experience.
- Information technology (IT) and cybersecurity.
- Marketing, communications and public affairs.
- Fundraising.
- Health industry knowledge or organizational/clinical/research knowledge.
- Prior experience with a charity or non-profit organization including legal, governance and regulatory compliance and reporting.
Equity and diversity and inclusion are essential to societal change and healthy workplaces. An open and diverse community fosters the inclusion of voices that have historically been underrepresented or discouraged. We encourage applications from members of groups that have been marginalized on any grounds enumerated under the B.C. Human Rights Code, including sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, racialization, disability, political belief, religion, marital or family status, age, and/or status as a First Nation, Metis, Inuit, or Indigenous person.
Board members will attend quarterly board meetings and sit on one of the Standing Committee’s of the Board (current committees are Finance & Audit, and Governance & Human Resources), an annual strategic planning session, education workshops, and ad-hoc board meetings as required (infrequent), as well as occasional fundraising and awareness raising events during the year. Board members also sometimes provide guidance to groups within the organization such as marketing and communications, and in this case, financial planning, strategy and reporting.

Next steps:
The Nominating Committee will review applications in by end of June and invite shortlisted candidates to attend a virtual interview between May 1-10 (accommodations can be made if the candidate is unavailable during this time). The Nominating Committee will recommend to the Governance and Human Resources Committee, the selected individuals for review at the June 25, 2024 Board of Directors meeting and then for election at the Annual General meeting September 26, 2024. You will be invited to attend the September meetings as a guest. All applications will receive a response of whether they will be moving forward or not.
