Share your experience of long-term care
Are you affected by restrictions on visitation in long-term care and assisted living? We’d like to hear from you! Fill out a short survey and help us advocate for every person in long-term care to have an essential visitor.
In response to the rapid spread of the COVID-19 variant Omicron, the Province of B.C. announced that effective January 1, 2022 only essential visitors would be able to enter long-term care and assisted living homes to visit residents. The Alzheimer Society of B.C. is seeking to better understand the impact that these restrictions have had on people with family members currently living in care.
Under the current guidelines, the definition of “essential visitor” is vague, and most residents do not have an essential visitor approved. Some care homes with access to rapid tests have been able to implement social visits with designated visitors, but these visits are not allowed if a care home is experiencing an outbreak. Essential visitors are intended to have access even in the event of an outbreak. This means that most residents in B.C. care homes have very limited access to in-person visits with their caregivers and other friends or family members.
If you are currently being affected by these restrictions, we invite you take 10 minutes to complete our survey and share your experiences with us. The information collected will inform our advocacy on how these policies can be changed to better support people living with dementia in long-term care and their families who provide support for them. The survey will remain open until February 21, 2022.
